Internal medicine is the practice of core health and wellness care for adults, including prevention, diagnosis, management and nonsurgical treatment of unusual or serious diseases. An internist, a physician practicing internal medicine, is classified as a primary care physician and can treat conditions associated with the eyes, ears, skin, heart, blood, kidneys, joints, reproductive organs and nervous, digestive, respiratory and vascular systems. An internist can also provide guidance with preventative health, mental health and a variety of medical conditions.
